Robert Thomas Rowland
(December 4, 1998 – August 23, 2016)

Robert Rowland, beloved son of David E. and Jerri Ann Rowland, was a vibrant young man who lived life to the fullest despite being diagnosed with Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy at the age of three. He had four sisters: Amber Maples, Ashley Aubuchon, Annaleese Williams, and Chloe Rowland. Robert attended Sacred Heart School, Poplar Bluff Junior High, and High School, and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

He was passionate about sports, especially as a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, SEC football, and St. Louis Blues hockey. Robert loved playing Buddy Ball, video gaming with friends, and spending time with family on the Current and Black Rivers. His father was his idol, and they shared memorable duck hunts, fish gigging trips, and boat rides. Robert enjoyed swimming in the Current River, pool time, and ocean swims in Destin, Florida.

He had the honor of throwing the first pitch at a Cardinals game in 2006 and was granted a Make-A-Wish cruise to Mexico and Jamaica in 2009. He attended MDA camp every summer, supported the Poplar Bluff Fire Department’s Fill the Boot campaigns, and served as the MDA ambassador in 2007, meeting the Governor and receiving a Proclamation. Robert also participated in the Special Olympics and volunteered at the Poplar Bluff VA Hospital.

Known for his “Superman” shirt, he was a beacon of joy at family gatherings, sporting events, and community activities. Robert’s spirited personality and zest for life left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him. He was a courageous, strong young man who inspired many, always engaging with others and lighting up every room with his smile. Robert’s legacy is honored with the dream of inclusive playground equipment, reflecting his love for all children to play and have fun together. He was truly a ray of sunshine and a superhero to his family and community.
